Q: What does "spaġ" mean? A: Spaġ - a Greek word meaning "to draw out" - together with ageirġ - meaning "to bind or join" - is part of an alchemical term known as spagyria. This is a process whereby raw materials are exalted through separation, purification and recombination. A frequently quoted phrase in alchemy is "Solve et coagula, et habebi magisterium! (Dissolve and bind, and you will have the magistery!) Its purpose is to increase and release specific therapeutic properties enabling the final product, or quinta essentia, to be of greater benefit than the sum of its parts. Q: What exactly is natural perfume? A: Natural perfume is the most sincere form of essence, composed solely from organic aromatic ingredients and devoid of any synthetic fragrances. Those easily overwhelmed by the permeating, almost asphyxiating quality of today's perfume counter fragrances will love the subtlety and authenticity of natural perfume. Q: What is the difference between natural and synthetic aromatics? A: Natural aromatics are pure extracts from plants, fruits, flowers, resins, herbs, spices, grasses and woods. Synthetic aromatics are created in a laboratory. Whether extracted, expressed or distilled, essential oils are the basic ingredients utilized in natural perfumery. And although essential oils are employed by the perfume industry, one also finds a heavy-handed dose of synthesized ingredients in the mix. Using what's known as "headspace technology", this method of gas chromatography captures the "fingerprint" of an odor from living plants, fruits, flowers, herbs, etc., which is then mimicked in a lab. Without a doubt this process captures the predominant odor, however, the complimentary nuances embodied in the real thing, are not. This process renders most synthetics, in my opinion, as truncated, linear and two dimensional. For instance, synthetic jasmine with its smell reminiscent of decay (to put it mildly) leaves much to be desired, while the rich, warm, deep, sweet yet fruity floral of genuine jasmine is magnificently multi-dimensional. Natural perfume is by far more "alive" and pleasing to the senses as it continues blooming, evolving, and revealing its beauty on your skin.
Q: What type of alcohol is used in spaġ perfumes? A: Perfumer's grade grain alcohol (190 proof) from corn, rye and/or wheat.
Q: What are the differences between parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and body splash? A: The difference is in the concentration ratio of aromatics to alcohol and distilled water. Parfum is the strongest, followed by eau de parfum, eau de toilette and body splash.
Q: How long will the scent of spaġ perfume last on the skin? A: It varies according to body chemistry, but generally, spaġ handcrafted natural perfumes last on the skin approximately: parfum: 12+ hours - eau de parfum: 6 - 8 hours - eau de toilette: 4 - 5 hours - body splash: 1 - 2 hours.
Q: Are your products really natural? A: Absolutely. In fact, we pride ourselves in the fact that only premium 100% natural ingredients make their way into spaġ products. See ingredient list below for Ylang Ylang Oakmoss Body Lotion.
Q: Your ingredients list mentions "fragrance". Is this synthetic fragrance? A: The FDA requires all products containing fragrance, including natural fragrances, to read as "fragrance". Due to our products being perfume based and perfume being a trade secret, we do not list every essential oil that goes in the formulas. (Soaps and massage oils are the exception as they are blends and not perfumery based.) spaġ labels list the 3 main fragrances, such as ylang ylang, oakmoss and rose, so the customer gets a sense of the prominent bouquet. And again, all ingredients in spaġ products are natural.
Q: Do spaġ products contain any preservatives? A: Beneficial grapefruit seed extract and nutritive Vitamin E are the only preservatives found in spaġ products, and both are, of course, natural.
Q: Where should I store my spaġ perfume and body care products? A: All products should be stored in a cool place away from sunlight, as heat and sunlight break down natural essences and ingredients very quickly. Due to constant temperature fluctuations, the bathroom is not a good place to keep your perfume! Lotions, soaps and dusting powders do just fine in the bathroom so long as they are kept away from sunlight.
Q: How long do spaġ natural soaps last? A: spaġ handcrafted soaps are cured for 3 weeks prior to being sold to you the customer. This ensures a mild yet hard bar that, with proper care, lasts through 2 - 3 weeks depending on frequency of use.
Q: How soon after placing my order will it ship? A: All online credit card orders, including Express Delivery, ship next business day. In the event an item is out of stock, you will be notified via email and given the option to either place that item on back order or cancel. Standard shipping is via insured Priority Mail and will arrive within 2 - 3 days from the shipping date.
Q: Can I pay with a check or money order? A: Yes. You may mail in your order and payment to: Spao Apothekaria, PO Box 531043, Miami Shores, FL 33153. Please make sure to include shipping charges. All checks must clear the bank (approx. 5 days from date of receipt) prior to your order shipping. Orders paid with money order will ship next business day. Returned checks are subject to a $35.00 fee.
Q: What is your return policy? A: Sample sizes of our perfumes and other products are offered in an effort to cut the costs associated with returns. Products may be returned within 5 days of receipt for a full refund, less shipping charges. Products must be unused and in original packaging and saleable condition. Perfumes and sample sizes may not be returned.
